Luke was diagnosed with B Cell ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) on September 4th, 2009. He immediately began chemotherapy at Loyola University Hospital. The chemotherapy treatments were very effective in putting him into remission. Because Luke was part of a leukemia study, they performed genetic testing on his bone marrow and leukemia cells. Those test results revealed that he has a rare chromosomal mutation in his leukemic chromosomes called hypodiploid leukemia. This means that instead of having 46 full chromosomes in his leukemia cells (not in the rest of his body), he is missing chromosomes. Because of this new finding, Luke’s doctor’s changed his treatment course to the most aggressive treatment program – a bone marrow transplant. In December, the bone marrow test results showed that Nick, Luke’s younger brother, was a PERFECT bone marrow match. On January 14th, the transplant was performed at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Luke spent about a month and half in the hospital and experienced all of the regular (but nasty) side effects of a bone marrow transplant. He returned home at the end of February, and is continuing to receive treatments at home. He is feeling much better, and we hope that he will be able to return to school and a semi-normal routine by the end of this school year.
